Mengxi Chen

The name of this theme is Found a Window, looking at traditional leaky windows through a different perspective (kaleidoscope). The work is inspired by ancient Chinese flower windows and group flowers, linking flat window patterns with blinds, a feature that can overlap and contract, to produce some three-dimensional patterns. The author hopes to use this form of new Chinese design to show oriental aesthetics and to achieve a balance between space and art while inheriting the tradition.

Modern architect I.M. Pei said "In the West Country, a window just is a window, it lets in sunlight and fresh air, but for the Chinese, it is a picture frame, the garden is always outside of it"

I hope that through a form of window, I can truly achieve the effect that the interior detects the exterior and the exterior affects the interior. To make an installation that makes the space rotate. A partition art that can rotate with the sunlight.

(The work uses Tpu lenticular printing technology and laser cutting technology, and while exploring new compilation techniques, it incorporates a photosensitive sensing circuit board to make mechanical movement changes that can be used to understand the intensity of ultraviolet light according to its speed of change and play the role of a window.)

She is from the soft systems programme on MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Art and Technology. Her main research is on how to combine textiles with future technology, and how to integrate technological functional materials and traditional Art with technology into textiles. From the design research of virtual clothing and virtual fabric to the current installation art of making space rotate, all of them allow textiles to develop into future technology.

Her current research is about the design of digital, virtual and human-computer interaction devices. Incorporating environmental changes into the design and she hopes to combine traditional and emerging technologies to collide with something different. Moving textiles towards a better technological future.
