Data and facts about epilepsy

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, with around 50 million people affected worldwide. It's a long-term condition that affects the brain with abnormal electrical activities and causes frequent seizures. Approximately 30% of patients live with uncontrolled seizures for an extended period.

For people living with epilepsy, they might experience multiple awareness-impaired seizures without warning on a daily or weekly basis. Although these seizures might not require immediate medical attention, they can cause cognitive impairment after seizures.

Postictal confusion occurs during the recovery period following a seizure when the patient experiences memory loss, disorientation, and difficulty recalling information. It has a significant impact on people's lives in terms of carrying out daily tasks, building social relationships, and maintaining mental health.

According to interviews with epilepsy experts and patients, postictal confusion is a neglected aspect of epilepsy. Sadly, there is no effective solution.

architecture of seizure detection system

Seizure detection is a crucial component that drives the entire system. Based on advancements in in-ear biometric detection, signal processing, and machine learning, the Mnemosyne system can extract typical seizure-related features from the biometric signal and detect even non-motor seizures.

Mnemosyne is designed considering the requirements of functionality (electronics placement, ergonomics, user requirements, etc.) and aesthetics. I am committed to making the product not just an assistive device, but also a symbol of a positive attitude towards epilepsy and the challenges it brings. The device is designed to resemble an elegant earring, intended to boost confidence for users when wearing it.

Mnemosyne has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by postictal confusion.

However, epilepsy poses a range of challenges beyond memory issues, including lifestyle adjustments, stigma, employment barriers, and mental health concerns. It is crucial for society to pay attention to these challenges and work towards comprehensive solutions that empower individuals living with epilepsy, promote inclusivity, and foster a supportive environment. Let's raise awareness, encourage understanding, and build a more inclusive society for everyone affected by epilepsy.
